Falcons kick off 2022 with comfortable victory

London Falcons comprehensively saw off high-flying Active Sports with a superb 3-0 victory that leaves them 5th in the Wimbledon and District League 1.

Falcons XI: Matt; Richard, George (c), Jeff, Joe; Baptiste, Marshal, Duncan; Will, Stevie, Pete

Subs: Will E, Fernando, Matt D

Goals: Will, Stevie, Pete

POTM: Duncan

With last week’s game being rained off and the Christmas period meaning that the Falcons had been without a game in nearly two months, you could have expected a slow start from the visitors. However the Falcons settled well into a more compact shape and immediately posed a threat on the counter, with their pace behind the Active Sports’ back line being quickly rewarded. With fifteen minutes on the clock, Stevie broke free down the left hand side, beating his man and firing a ball across the face of the goal to be met by Will at the back post, who was in the right place to coolly dispatch the finish. Stevie then got the name on the scoresheet himself, with another Falcons’ counter cutting through the Active Sports lines and allowing the Irishman to break through into the box, round the keeper and slot into an empty net.

The chances kept coming with Will and Stevie having great chances on either side of half time to add to their scoresheet. Meanwhile at the other end, a resolute Falcons defence stood firm in rare moments of Active Sports pressure, with Jeff in particular dishing out a couple of last-ditch blocks to keep the Falcons’ sheet clean.

The Falcons did eventually make it three, with Marshal, playing in a deeper role than usual, playing a superb through ball up to Pete, who delivered a trademark lob over the on-rushing keeper to put the game to bed. It should have been 4, but a very questionable offside call prevented Stevie from doubling his tally.

The result sees us start a new managerial era with a win and lifts us into the top half of the table!
