On a blustery autumnal afternoon, London Falcons’ winning start to the season came to an end after a 3-1 defeat to the Wimbledon Saints in the Wimbledon and District Centenary Cup.
Falcons XI: Matt; Ed S, Pete, Charlie, George (c), Kieran; Jimmy, Myles, Steff; Will, Stevie. Subs: Vuong, Matt D, Rob Man of the Match: Charlie Goals: Ed S In a cagey first half, it was difficult to tell that a division separated the two sides, with the Falcons having the best of the action early on. Yet despite boxing their opponents in their own half for prolonged periods, they were unable to turn the screw and find a clear cut opportunity, meaning the scores were level at 0-0 at half time. Straight after the break, the Falcons were punished for their profligacy in possession with a series of three quick strikes that saw the game wrapped up for the hosts by the hour mark. Two fine strikes and a penalty saw the Saints all but seal their place in the next round with a third of the game still on the clock, as the shellshocked Falcons worked to stem the tide. And stem the tide they did, with the visitors reasserting their grip on the game as it progressed into its dying embers, eventually being rewarded with a late goal. Matt D’s corner ricocheted around the area, with Ed S emerging as the winner of penalty box pinball, turning the ball into the net, despite the best efforts of Man of the Match Charlie to steal the goal off him!
Post-match, it was time to enjoy Halloween as we visited our sponsors, CMYK Wimbledon, complete with face paint! It’s back to league action next week, with Imperial Old Boys the visitors to Tooting Bec Common!
